What Makes A Product Vegan?

Have you ever wondered what the term “vegan product” really means? For a beauty product to be considered vegan, none of the ingredients in its formulations can be derived from animals. This includes anything that is extracted or considered a byproduct of an animal including but not limited to cows (milk), bees (honey), fish (collagen and fish oil), sheep, carmine, worm (silk), oils (emu, whale, lanolin, mink) and blood. There are so many ingredients used in skincare formulations that are derived from animals soap made with beef fat, carmine, a bug, used in lipstick and keratin used in haircare.

So, does vegan also mean cruelty-free?

Yes, vegan also means cruelty-free.

You may be wondering - if a product is cruelty-free, does that make it vegan, too? The answer to that is maybe. As mentioned earlier, when a product is vegan it simply means that no ingredients within that product helped to create the final formula. When a product is cruelty-free, it means that in the making of the product it is not was tested on animals.

For decades, animals have been used to experiment and test cosmetics before being sold to the mass-market. The major difference is that cruelty-free products aim to protect and preserve life, as well as, the well-being of animals. While, vegan products do not use or incorporate any ingredients derived from any animal.
